Logitech's MX Keypad aims to streamline AI development with customisable controls

Logitech has launched the MX Keypad, a compact control device designed to help developers manage multiple AI coding assistants and cross-application workflows, revolutionising the way code supervision is performed.

Logitech has brought its programmable desk controls further into software engineering with the launch of MX Keypad, a compact $99.99 peripheral aimed at developers who now work across several AI coding assistants rather than a single editor. The device arrives as the company tries to turn a category once associated mainly with design and video tools into a control surface for code, prompts and agent management. Forbes described it as a successor to Logitech’s earlier creative-focused keypad hardware, but one refitted for software teams and broader cross-application use.

The company’s pitch rests on a problem that is becoming familiar in AI-assisted development: less time spent typing every line manually, and more time supervising tools, approving actions and moving between windows. In an interview with Digit at a launch event in New Delhi, Logitech’s Valeriya Kostyukovskaya said agentic AI was changing coding “extremely fast” and creating friction as developers switched between tabs and agents. She said Logitech saw “the gap for a tactile, physical control centre” that could both trigger actions and show what an AI session was doing.

That thinking shapes the hardware and software design. MX Keypad uses nine customisable colour display keys, with additional pages available through onboard navigation buttons, so a small pad can expose a much larger set of actions. Through Logi Options+, users can assign macros, saved prompts, scripts and shortcuts, while application-aware profiles change the layout automatically as they move between tools. Logitech is presenting that as a way to let one set of physical controls follow the user across editors, browsers, team chat and other software instead of locking them into a single vendor’s environment. The company has also said any key can be set to control one application or several apps and agents together.

GitHub is central to the launch. Logitech said the keypad was developed in close collaboration with GitHub and ships with native support for VS Code and the GitHub Copilot app, alongside three months of GitHub Copilot Pro+ redeemable in Logi Options+ for both new and existing users. Martin Woodward, GitHub’s vice-president of developer relations, said: “Great developer tools get out of your way.” He added that the keypad should make Copilot feel more natural in day-to-day work, helping developers “spend less time navigating tools and more time building”. Logitech has also said support will broaden further over time.

The wider ecosystem matters almost as much as the hardware itself. Logitech says community-built plugins for Claude Code and OpenAI Codex are already available through Logi Marketplace, adding functions such as live agent-status monitoring and command-line control from the physical keys. Its Logi Actions SDK is meant to push that further by letting engineers build their own integrations quickly, with support for C# and Node.js, while company materials say the documentation is structured so coding agents themselves can generate new integrations. One version of the launch material says those community tools can already work across more than 100 million compatible Logitech devices, suggesting Logitech is trying to seed a broader platform rather than a one-off accessory.

Digit’s interview gave a clearer sense of how Logitech expects the pad to be used in practice. Kostyukovskaya said developers may assign buttons to active Codex or Claude Code sessions so they can watch state changes without keeping an agent window permanently in front of them. She also pointed to simple yes-or-no responses, prewritten prompts, voice control and one-touch routines for tasks such as debugging sequences or steps around a pull request. She said one senior developer had described waiting for an agent to finish as a particular irritation, because people ended up staring at the tool instead of getting on with other work; the keypad, she argued, lets that supervision continue in the background.

On the technical side, MX Keypad connects over USB-C and requires macOS 13 or later, or Windows 10 or later. Forbes reported dimensions of 91.7mm by 77.9mm by 25.5mm for the keypad itself, with a listed weight of 96g, underscoring Logitech’s effort to make it small enough to sit beside a laptop or full-size keyboard without demanding a full studio setup. The product went on sale on 8 September 2026 in Graphite and Pale Grey. Logitech said it would be available in selected markets at $99.99 and €99.99.

There is also a secondary message about materials and positioning. Logitech says the graphite version uses 64% certified post-consumer recycled plastic, compared with 49% for the pale grey model, and that the paper packaging comes from FSC-certified forests and other controlled sources. More important commercially, however, is the bet underneath the launch: that as coding becomes a workflow of supervising models, prompts and tools, developers may want dedicated physical controls in the same way creative professionals adopted shortcut consoles. Logitech is trying to make that case by offering broad compatibility, community extensibility and a lower-cost entry point than its larger creative consoles.
