Google has adopted a new two-week stable release cycle for Chrome, aiming to reduce vulnerability exposure and speed up AI feature deployment amid rising cybersecurity threats and automated exploit development.
Google has begun shipping Chrome on a two-week stable release cycle, marking a clear break from the four-week cadence it adopted in 2021. The first build under the faster timetable is Chrome 153, now rolling out across desktop, iOS and Android, according to the company’s earlier announcement and reports from security and browser industry outlets.
The change is part of a broader shift in Google’s security planning as artificial intelligence tools accelerate both defensive patching and offensive attack methods. Google has said a shorter cycle reduces the time between fixing a flaw in the public codebase and delivering that fix to users, helping to narrow the so-called N-day gap. That matters more now, the company argues, because automated reporting, faster exploit development and a rising volume of vulnerability disclosures are all increasing the pressure on browser maintainers.
Security concerns have been underscored by this month’s Chrome update, which addressed a dozen vulnerabilities, including one actively exploited flaw in the V8 JavaScript engine, according to TechRadar. The issue, tracked as CVE-2026-85046, is a type confusion bug that could allow remote code execution through a specially crafted web page. That kind of patch urgency fits the rationale behind the new release model: fewer days between stable milestones means a shorter window in which users remain exposed.
The faster cadence is also meant to help Chrome ship new features more quickly, particularly as Google adds more AI-related functions to the browser and iterates on them at speed. The Chromium project says stable releases are now planned every two weeks, with weekly security updates continuing separately after each milestone lands. Google has kept the Dev and Canary channels unchanged, while the Extended Stable track remains on an eight-week cycle for organisations that need more time to manage updates.
The new timetable is likely to influence the wider browser market as well. Chrome still sets the pace for much of the web, and Mozilla, Microsoft and Brave have already moved towards shorter release cycles of their own, according to reporting cited by TechCrunch. In practice, that means browser vendors are now competing not only on features, but on how quickly they can absorb security fixes and respond to a platform that is evolving faster than before.
