Adobe has rolled out a major overhaul of Acrobat, integrating AI tools to enhance document productivity, from interactive reports to AI assistants linking with cloud repositories, reflecting a shift towards a smarter, more versatile platform.
Adobe has given Acrobat one of its broadest overhauls in years, adding tools that move the software well beyond basic PDF viewing. The latest update can turn documents into interactive visual reports and podcast-style audio, while a new Knowledge Base links the Acrobat AI assistant to repositories such as Microsoft SharePoint and Google Drive. Adobe says the changes reflect a shift from a file reader to an AI-enabled document productivity and creativity platform.
The scale of the product remains substantial. Adobe says Acrobat users open more than 400 billion PDFs in the app each year, and that it had 650 million monthly active users last year. Those figures help explain why the company is pushing harder to make the format feel less static and more useful in enterprise workflows.
The latest changes build on a series of efforts to embed Acrobat more deeply into other work systems. In 2023, Adobe and Microsoft said they were bringing Acrobat PDF capabilities into Microsoft Edge for more than 1.4 billion Windows users, with Adobe stressing fidelity, speed, security and accessibility. Earlier this year, Adobe also launched Acrobat Studio, combining Acrobat and Adobe Express and adding AI chat features for tasks such as generating presentations and audio summaries from documents.
Adobe has also been extending its AI tools around Acrobat itself. The company says AI Assistant can summarise PDFs, answer questions and trace responses back to the source material, while Adobe’s document cloud updates have increasingly focused on automation and accessibility for larger organisations. Taken together, the changes show Adobe trying to make Acrobat a working layer for knowledge extraction, not just a place to open files.
