The new iPhone 18 Pro Max introduces meaningful hardware improvements, including a variable-aperture camera and upgraded modem, while maintaining a familiar design and higher price point in India.
Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max is a fairly conservative design update, but it does bring some meaningful hardware changes over the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The new model keeps the 6.9-inch display size and aluminium unibody, yet moves to the A20 Pro chip, adds a variable-aperture main camera and introduces Apple’s C2 cellular modem, according to Apple’s technical specifications. The company also says the handset gets longer battery life and quicker wired charging.
In India, the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at Rs. 1,79,900 for the 256GB version, with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB variants also available. Apple has set pre-orders for September 12 and sales for September 18. That places it Rs. 30,000 above the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which launched in India at Rs. 1,49,900 for the base 256GB model. Macworld’s release guide says the Pro Max family keeps the same 6.9-inch form factor and aluminium construction as the previous generation, even as Apple raises the price in line with the newer hardware.
On display specifications, there is little to separate the two phones. Both use a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel with 2,868 x 1,320 resolution, 460ppi, ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On display support and a peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits. The newer handset ships with iOS 27, while the older model launched with iOS 26. In other words, the practical difference is more about silicon and camera hardware than screen technology.
The camera system is where the upgrade is most visible. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max keeps the triple 48-megapixel rear setup, but replaces the fixed-aperture main camera with a variable one that can shift between f/1.48 and f/4.0. The telephoto camera still delivers 4x optical zoom and up to 8x optical-quality zoom, while the front camera remains an 18-megapixel Centre Stage unit with autofocus. MacRumors has noted, however, that modem details may vary by model and region, which suggests some specification differences could emerge outside Apple’s main summary. On paper, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the faster, longer-lasting and better-equipped phone, but the iPhone 17 Pro Max still offers most of the same screen and camera baseline for less money.
