Acer unveils the Vero 16, a groundbreaking AI-focused laptop prioritising eco-friendly design and user reparability, blending high-tier performance with enhanced sustainability features that align with Europe’s Right to Repair movement.
Acer has used IFA to put sustainability and repairability at the centre of its latest Vero 16, while still pushing the machine towards the performance tier expected of a modern AI PC. The fourth generation of the line pairs a 16-inch 3K OLED panel with an Intel Core Ultra X9 388H processor, integrated Intel Arc B390 graphics and an NPU package rated at up to 180 TOPS for AI workloads. Acer says the configuration can be fitted with up to 32GB of LPDDR5x memory and a 512GB SSD.
The specification is broad enough to reduce the need for adapters. Acer lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, an SD card reader and Wi-Fi 7. The keyboard includes the company’s MyKey shortcut key, which can be assigned to launch apps, websites or Windows functions. A 5MP infrared camera with a privacy shutter supports video calls and Windows Hello sign-in, while the twin anti-vibration speakers are designed to limit distortion and mechanical noise.
The more important shift is in design philosophy. Acer says the Vero range has moved from a 3R approach, based on reduce, reuse and recycle, to a 4R model that adds repairability. The chassis uses a mix of 50% post-industrial recycled aluminium and 50% low-carbon aluminium in the upper shell and palm rests, while the lower cover contains 60% post-consumer recycled plastic and the display bezels use 30% recycled plastic. The laptop also ships in fully recyclable packaging.
Repair access has been made more practical. Acer has added an engraved visual guide for maintenance, a tool-free access latch on the base, and user-replaceable battery and SSD parts. The hinge is also intended to be removable, and the I/O port covers can be taken off for servicing. T3 reported that the design fits neatly with Europe’s Right to Repair direction, while Acer says the platform is built to support processor upgrades across at least two generations. The Vero 16 will ship with Windows 11 and Copilot+ certification, with availability in Spain expected in the first quarter of 2027.
