Efficiency Mode in Windows 11 Task Manager can be useful when a background process is consuming more resources than it should, but the control is not always available. Users have reported that the option turns grey for some entries even when the green leaf indicator is already visible, and Microsoft’s own Q&A forum suggests this is often because Task Manager is dealing with a protected system process or a grouped application rather than a single manageable task. PCWorld has also noted that Windows may block the setting for items such as Explorer, Defender and Chrome when stability could be affected. According to Microsoft’s support discussion, the first step is often to expand the process tree and check the individual sub-processes rather than the parent entry.
That distinction matters because Windows frequently bundles related tasks under one heading. In those cases, the main application line may not allow changes, while one of the child processes still does. Microsoft’s forum guidance says Chrome and Edge can also display the Efficiency Mode marker because they use Windows power-saving APIs, which can make the feature look as though it is locked when it is really being applied automatically. If another ordinary app can be changed normally, the greyed-out control is more likely tied to the specific process than to Task Manager itself.
Some users try a Registry workaround by turning off Power Throttling under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlPower.
