PlayCanvas unveils SuperSplat Editor 3.0 with WebGPU optimisation and new editing features

PlayCanvas has launched SuperSplat Editor 3.0, a major update that leverages WebGPU technology to enable larger, more responsive 3D Gaussian Splat scenes directly within browsers, with new tools for artists and technical users.

PlayCanvas has released SuperSplat Editor 3.0, a substantial update to its free, open-source browser tool for working with 3D Gaussian Splats. According to PlayCanvas, the editor has been rebuilt around WebGPU, which allows much larger scenes to be loaded and edited while staying responsive in a standard web browser.

The software is aimed at artists and technical users who need to clean up, adjust and publish 3D Gaussian Splat captures without leaving the browser. Users can import data in PLY and other common formats, remove or re-orient individual splats, make broader edits with volume selection tools, and apply colour grading. They can also set up camera flythroughs and export results in formats including SPZ and SOG, PlayCanvas’s compressed format.

A key addition in version 3.0 is a Stochastic Alpha rendering mode for very heavy scenes. PlayCanvas says this reduces the need to sort Gaussians before rendering, which helps keep large captures interactive when frame times rise. The company also says memory usage is significantly lower than before, with its example of a 4.4 million-splat scene showing more than a tenfold reduction in some cases, although the savings vary depending on the task.

The update also adds a Sphere brush for painting selections directly on to 3D surfaces, making it easier to isolate visible geometry without grabbing splats behind it. Selection-specific colour grading is now available as well. PlayCanvas positions SuperSplat as part of a wider Gaussian Splatting workflow, with publishing and sharing tools built in, and the editor remains available free in Chrome, Edge, Safari 26+ and Firefox where WebGPU is enabled.
