Google has released a dedicated Gemini app for Windows PCs, enabling faster access to its AI assistant and new features like image and video generation, marking a significant step in its AI ecosystem expansion.
Google has released a desktop Gemini app for Windows, extending the assistant beyond the browser and mobile devices. According to ITmedia NEWS, the application is available globally from 10 September for Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, with Japanese language support included from launch.
The main selling point is speed of access. Users can call up Gemini over whatever they are already working on with Alt+Space, keeping the assistant layered on top of the current screen rather than forcing a switch between windows. Google says that makes it easier to check facts in documents, draft presentation titles and handle other small tasks without breaking the flow of work.
Once signed in, the Windows app is designed to expose much of the wider Gemini feature set in one place. ITmedia NEWS reported that users can delegate multi-step work to Gemini Spark, Google’s always-on personal AI agent, and pull information directly from services such as Gmail and Google Drive to build summaries. The app also supports image generation through Nano Banana and video generation through Gemini Omni, although access to Spark and Omni requires a Google AI subscription. Availability varies by region, and the services are restricted to adults aged 18 and over.
Google says the app is intended to run lightly in the background without slowing the PC, and it has framed the release as an early step rather than a finished endpoint. That matters because Windows users have already had some Gemini-related access options: Google launched a separate Google app for Windows in April with Alt+Space search, local file lookup and Google Lens, initially in English only. On Macs, Google’s Gemini app has already been rolled out globally, making the new Windows release the company’s first dedicated Gemini desktop application for Microsoft’s platform.
