Pre-ordering the new iPhone 18 Pro involves critical choices, storage, connectivity, size, and colour, that could have significant and lasting financial implications for buyers, with storage costs reaching into four figures.
Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro pre-order window forces buyers to make a small set of decisions that have lasting financial consequences. By the time checkout is complete, the key choices are fixed: storage, connectivity, screen size, trade-in and colour. Of those, only storage can change the price by a four-figure sum, while colour has no cost impact at all. Apple says pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on Saturday, September 12, with delivery starting on September 18.
Storage is the most expensive mistake. Apple offers the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB variants, with the Pro starting at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299. At the top end, the 2TB model reaches $2,399 for the Pro and $2,499 for the Pro Max, a $1,200 spread from the entry level. Apple does not offer post-purchase storage upgrades, so the choice is permanent once the order is placed.
Connectivity can also alter the headline price, though the handset itself is unchanged. Apple says customers who choose select carriers at checkout may receive connectivity discounts, while the store also notes that the device arrives unlocked even when bought through carrier financing. The company’s newsroom release says trade-in credit can range from $175 to $885 for eligible devices such as the iPhone 13 or later, while carrier deals can go as high as $1,200 in bill credits over time for qualifying trade-ins.
Size is the simpler choice, but it still carries a clear premium. The 6.3-inch model weighs 211g, while the 6.9-inch version weighs 249g, and Apple charges $100 more for the larger model at every storage tier. The trade-off is extended battery life, with Apple rating the smaller phone for up to 36 hours of video playback and the larger one for up to 45 hours. That makes the Pro Max the better option for endurance, but not necessarily the better value if the screen size is not a priority.
Colour remains the least consequential decision. Apple lists black, silver, glacier and burgundy, with no price difference between them. That makes the visual finish the only part of the order that can be chosen entirely on preference. Apple also says the phones ship in the same core platform regardless of configuration, with the A20 Pro chip shared across the range.
