BenQ’s new MA270S offers a compelling, more affordable alternative to the Apple Studio Display, matching high-resolution and colour quality while providing greater connectivity and flexibility, though it misses some integrated features cherished by Mac users.
BenQ’s MA270S and Apple’s Studio Display sit in the same niche: 27-inch 5K monitors aimed at Mac users who care about sharp text, accurate colour and a premium finish. But the price gap is large enough to change the decision. According to the Italian comparison from HWUpgrade, the BenQ is around €600 cheaper, which makes the choice less about image quality alone and more about whether Apple’s extra hardware and tighter integration are worth the premium.
On paper, the BenQ looks very close to the Apple panel. RTINGS and other reviews describe a 5K IPS display at 5120×2880, with 218ppi, 99% P3 coverage and a claimed 450 nits of brightness. It also brings HDMI 2.1, dual Thunderbolt 4 ports with up to 96W charging, USB-C hub functions, KVM switching and daisy-chaining support. Its stand allows height, tilt, swivel and pivot adjustment, while the glossy Nano Gloss finish is clearly intended to echo Apple’s own aesthetic.
That positions the MA270S as a practical alternative for professionals who want a Mac-friendly display without paying for the full Studio Display package. TechRadar, MacWorld and Tom’s Guide all found it strong on clarity, colour and connectivity, with the built-in speakers described as adequate rather than exceptional. The key omission is Apple’s all-in-one extras: the Studio Display adds a 12MP camera with Centre Stage and a more advanced six-speaker system with Spatial Audio, which can matter for video calls and desk-based media work.
The Studio Display still has advantages beyond its integrated webcam and audio. TechRadar’s review says it remains tightly tuned to the Mac experience, and the Apple display is generally positioned as the more polished, fully integrated option. The BenQ, by contrast, is the more flexible purchase: it offers broadly similar image fundamentals, more connection options and a more adjustable stand. For creators who mainly want a high-end 5K panel, the MA270S appears to cover the essentials with very little compromise.
