Apple has launched the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, marking a strategic entry into a small but growing market. The device combines premium design with ecosystem integration, signalling a focus on durability and user experience over initial hardware specifications.
Apple has entered the foldable phone market with the iPhone Duo, unveiled at John Ternus’s first major launch event as chief executive. The announcement also covered the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, new AirPods and updated Apple Watch models, but the foldable handset was the clear centrepiece. Analysts say the timing matters: Apple is arriving years after Samsung helped define the category, yet its scale and software control give it a strong chance of reshaping it.
The Duo adopts a compact, passport-like form that opens to reveal a 7.6-inch inner display, paired with a 5.4-inch outer screen. Apple says both panels use the same aspect ratio to make the transition between closed and open use more consistent, while the phone also supports split-screen multitasking and Apple Pencil input. Reports from the launch describe a titanium frame, a refined hinge and a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare.
Under the bonnet, Apple has fitted the A20 Pro chip, placing the Duo on the same performance tier as the new iPhone 18 Pro line. The company is also leaning heavily on iOS 27, which has been adjusted for foldable use with redesigned controls and improved multitasking. That matters because Apple’s strength has always been the close fit between hardware, software and developer tools, and that could be more important here than raw specifications alone.
There are trade-offs. Apple has omitted Face ID, instead using Touch ID in the side button, and the device does not include MagSafe. Camera hardware is also more limited than on the Pro models, even though the company positions the Duo as a premium device. The foldable market remains comparatively small, representing less than 5% of global smartphone sales, so Apple is making a calculated entry rather than chasing mass volume immediately.
Pricing confirms that this is Apple’s most expensive iPhone to date. The Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, with pre-orders due to begin on 16 October and deliveries from 23 October. It comes in Star White and Night Sky. The launch suggests Apple is betting that durability, polish and ecosystem integration will matter more to buyers than a first-generation specification sheet, especially in a category that has so far been as much about status as utility.
