Google launches native Gemini desktop app for Windows and Mac, enhancing AI assistant integration

Google introduces a native Gemini app for Windows and Mac, enabling seamless AI assistance directly within the operating system and supporting multi-tasking for productivity.

Google has released a native Gemini desktop app for Windows, widening access to its AI assistant beyond the browser and into the operating system itself. According to Google’s release notes and support material, the app is designed to sit alongside other work, with a shortcut-based interface that can be opened quickly over active tasks and used without switching away from documents or apps.

On Windows, users can summon Gemini with Alt+Space, while on Mac the shortcut is Option+Space, with a fuller chat view also available through an additional key combination. Google says the app can work with the contents of the screen, including shared windows and local files, so it can comment on what is visible, summarise charts or help draft text in context. TechRadar reported a similar design for the Mac version, which launched as a native app rather than a browser wrapper.

Google says the Windows app is available globally on Windows 10 and Windows 11, while the Mac version requires Apple Silicon and macOS Sequoia or later. The company’s support pages add that both desktop apps need at least 8 GB of memory and about 200 MB of free storage. Google also says chat history and memory sync across web, mobile and desktop when the same Google account is used.

The wider pitch is to make Gemini a more persistent assistant across day-to-day work. Google describes Gemini Spark as a personal AI agent for multi-step tasks, with access to connected services such as Gmail, Drive, Docs and Calendar, and says it can also generate images and video from the desktop. The company is positioning the product as part of a broader move towards more integrated, system-level AI, although availability of some features varies by platform and subscription tier.
