Following the release of iOS 27, users may notice short-term battery drain and warmth due to background processes. Apple advises patience as these effects are part of normal post-update activity, with performance stabilising after a few days.
If your iPhone seems to be losing power more quickly after installing iOS 27, it may not mean the update has caused lasting damage. Major iOS releases often trigger background work that continues after the installation has finished, and Apple says that can temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance.
That extra activity can include tasks such as organising files, updating components and completing other system processes needed by the new software. According to Apple’s guidance as reported by Macworld and other publications, those jobs can make the phone feel warmer and reduce battery life for a short period before things settle down.
Recent versions of iOS can show a useful clue in Settings. In the Battery section, an “Ongoing iOS Update” insight may appear while the device is still finishing post-installation work. The same menu also breaks down which apps and system activities are using power, which helps distinguish a normal update effect from an app that has started drawing unusually heavily on the battery.
There is also a simple reason the first day after an update can be misleading: people usually use their phone more. Exploring new features, downloading updated apps and changing settings can all increase screen time and make battery comparisons look worse than they really are. Apple advises users to wait a few days before judging performance, and to check Battery Health if the drain remains severe once the update work is complete. Low Power Mode can help in the meantime, while supported iPhones can use Adaptive Power to limit usage on days when demand is expected to be high. According to the article, iOS 27 is due to arrive on Monday, September 14, with changes across Siri, Apple Intelligence, Photos, Maps and Safari.
