Updated guidelines highlight critical safety measures for charging, storing, and transporting lithium-polymer batteries used in FPV drones, aiming to prevent thermal runaway and fire risks.
LiPo batteries sit at the heart of most camera drones and FPV quads, but they demand more discipline than the packs in phones or laptops. Their pouch-style construction delivers high current for aggressive flight, yet it also makes them more vulnerable to puncture, crushing, overcharge and deep discharge. FAA guidance on lithium batteries and FPV safety guides from specialist sources both point to the same conclusion: damage, heat and charging errors are the main triggers of thermal runaway, the rapid chain reaction that can turn a battery into a fire in seconds.
Safe charging begins with supervision. A LiPo should be charged only while someone is present, on a non-flammable surface, and preferably inside a LiPo-safe bag or other containment. FPV Recycling and iFlight Europe both advise using a balance charger with the correct cell count and chemistry settings, and charging at the manufacturer’s recommended rate, commonly 1C. A pack that is swelling, heating unusually, leaking or producing a strange smell should be stopped immediately and taken out of service.
Storage matters just as much as charging. The widely recommended resting point is about 3.80V to 3.85V per cell, which reduces long-term chemical stress compared with leaving a pack fully charged. AllRCGuide and other FPV battery references note that this range helps limit degradation while avoiding the risks that come with letting a pack drift too low. Batteries should be kept cool, dry and away from flammable materials, and packs that have been deeply discharged or left idle for long periods should be checked carefully before reuse.
There are also clear signs that a battery should be retired rather than revived. DJI’s maintenance guidance is blunt that swollen, leaking or physically damaged batteries should not be used. That warning extends to packs with torn foil, dents from crashes, cells that refuse to balance properly, or those that run hot during charging or storage. Once a LiPo has puffed, it is already chemically compromised; it should not be punctured, repaired or kept in a flight case with serviceable batteries.
Disposal and travel rules are equally strict. Lithium batteries should not go into household waste; they belong with hazardous-waste collection or battery-recycling schemes. Before transport, exposed terminals should be taped to reduce short-circuit risk. On aircraft, the FAA says spare lithium batteries must travel in carry-on baggage only, never in checked luggage, and passengers should immediately alert the crew if a battery or device is overheating, smoking or burning. Batteries damaged or recalled for safety reasons are not permitted in passenger baggage at all, which makes pre-trip inspection essential for anyone carrying drone spares.
