BMX’s SolidSafe Air, a ultra-thin 5,000mAh power bank with semi-solid-state battery cells, promises improved safety and portability for everyday charging, marking a significant shift towards mainstream adoption of next-generation battery technology.
BMX’s SolidSafe Air is a power bank aimed at users who want something they can carry every day without the usual bulk or anxiety. At 6.8 mm thick, it is thinner than many current smartphones, and it is built around semi-solid-state battery cells rather than conventional liquid electrolyte chemistry, a design BMX says leaves only about 2.5% liquid content in the pack. That matters because the reduced liquid component is intended to lower the risk of thermal runaway, the chain reaction that can cause a battery to swell, overheat or catch fire.
The company positions the Air as a 5,000mAh magnetic charger for light, on-the-go use. It supports 20W wired charging over USB-C and 15W Qi2 wireless charging, and it can power two devices at once. Four LEDs show the remaining charge and charging status. BMX also gives the device a titanium enclosure, which helps it feel more like a premium accessory than a disposable battery pack.
In practical use, the appeal is its size. It is slim enough to sit against the back of a phone for extended periods without turning the handset into a brick, and it is designed for magnetic attachment on compatible iPhones or any phone fitted with a magnetic ring or case. New Atlas said the Air held up well during testing across busy days and even in warmer conditions, with no noticeable overheating while charging wirelessly. That is where the semi-solid-state design becomes more than a specification sheet talking point.
The broader battery market is starting to move in the same direction. BMX’s own 2026 comparison of semi-solid-state power banks describes a growing category built around improved safety and energy density, while technical analysis from independent battery sites says the shift away from liquid electrolyte can also improve stability under load and reduce dendrite growth. Android Central reported earlier this year that BMX introduced the SolidSafe range at CES 2026, framing it as part of the push to bring this battery chemistry into mainstream consumer accessories.
For buyers choosing between slim magnetic packs, the Air sits in a narrow but useful niche. New Atlas noted that competing semi-solid-state models from Kuxiu and Xiaomi exist, but availability, thickness and charging speed vary, while cheaper lithium-ion rivals tend to be bulkier and less established. BMX also sells a larger 10,000mAh SolidSafe model with faster 30W USB-C charging, a built-in display and a short cable stored on a lanyard loop for users who need more capacity. The Air itself is priced at US$59.99 and is available in silver, gold and black.
