Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the Duo, introduces a new form factor focused on multitasking and innovation, contrasting with the traditional and refined iPhone 18 Pro Max, which offers more pro features at a lower price.
Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max represent two very different ideas of a premium iPhone. One leans on new hardware and multitasking, while the other refines the familiar slab design that still defines the flagship market. According to Geeky Gadgets, the comparison comes down to whether buyers value novelty and flexibility, or a more conventional top-end iPhone with fewer compromises.
The Duo’s biggest draw is its folding form factor. TechRadar reported that Apple has built the handset around a 7.6-inch inner display and a smaller outer screen, with iOS 27 adapted for foldable use. Android Central noted that Apple has also added split-screen multitasking, App Pairs and Dual View, placing productivity at the centre of the device. The Duo further stands out for its anti-reflective display treatment and support for the USB-C Apple Pencil, although Tom’s Guide said stylus support will not be available at launch.
That innovation comes with omissions. Tom’s Guide reported that the Duo drops Face ID in favour of side-mounted Touch ID, and leaves out the telephoto camera found on the Pro model. It also lacks several pro-level camera tools, including variable aperture, Pro Controls, ProRAW and spatial video recording. Digital Camera World argued that this makes the Duo a difficult choice for photographers, who may be forced to sacrifice imaging quality for the sake of the foldable design.
By contrast, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is positioned as the safer choice for users who want Apple’s most complete traditional phone. Tom’s Guide said it includes an 8x optical zoom telephoto lens and LiDAR, while TechRadar reported that the Pro Max benefits from the A20 Pro chip and battery life of up to 45 hours of video playback. The model also keeps Face ID and the Action Button, both of which are absent from the Duo.
Price sharpens the divide. Geeky Gadgets said the Duo starts at $1,999, compared with $1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, making Apple’s foldable a much more expensive entry point. Wallpaper reported that the Duo uses a titanium frame and comes in a limited colour palette, while the 18 Pro series offers broader choice and a more established accessory ecosystem. For buyers, the decision is therefore less about which phone is better in absolute terms and more about whether they want Apple’s first foldable experiment or its most polished mainstream flagship.
