Sonnet Technologies launches the Breakaway Box 850 T5 in the US, offering professional-grade external GPU enclosure and Dock with Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, supporting full-size graphics cards and versatile peripheral options.
Sonnet Technologies has launched the Breakaway Box 850 T5 in the United States, positioning it as an external graphics enclosure for Windows 11 systems that need desktop-class GPU performance without a full system upgrade. The company is pricing the device at $599.99, with a two-year warranty, and says it is built around Thunderbolt 5 connectivity and an 850W power supply. According to Sonnet, the enclosure is also backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 hosts.
The enclosure uses a fully enclosed metal chassis and is designed for triple-slot graphics cards up to 345 x 155 x 70 mm. Sonnet says it supports Nvidia GeForce RTX 50, 40 and 30 series cards, as well as AMD Radeon RX 9000, 7000 and 6000 series boards. B&H Photo Video’s listing and Sonnet’s own specifications both describe the box as accommodating full-size GPUs, rather than the more limited cards often required by smaller eGPU docks.
Cooling is handled by a large variable-speed fan, which Sonnet says is thermally controlled to balance airflow and noise. The power supply can feed demanding graphics cards through three 8-pin connectors, a 16-pin connector, or a 12-pin connection via adaptor. That makes the unit closer to a self-contained desktop expansion chassis than a simple external adapter, which may matter to users who want a single enclosure for both graphics acceleration and power delivery.
Sonnet has also added what amounts to a small Thunderbolt 5 dock. The enclosure includes a second Thunderbolt 5 port for daisy-chaining, three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports rated at 10 Gb/s, and a 5 Gigabit Ethernet port. Thunderbolt 5’s 80 Gb/s bidirectional bandwidth is the key specification here, and Sonnet is clearly aiming the product at users who want one dock to serve as both a GPU enclosure and a peripheral hub. EnosTech says the device is being pitched at gamers, creators and other professionals looking for higher graphics performance without replacing their main computer.
