Sonnet has launched the Breakaway Box 850 T5, a Thunderbolt 5 external GPU dock tailored for high-performance Windows 11 PCs, enabling laptops and compact desktops to access desktop-class graphics hardware with impressive throughput and versatile connectivity.
Sonnet has launched the Breakaway Box 850 T5, a Thunderbolt 5 external GPU enclosure aimed at Windows 11 PCs fitted with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 ports that support external graphics. The company says the unit is designed to let laptops and compact desktops tap desktop-class graphics hardware through a single cable, rather than relying on integrated or mobile GPUs. It carries a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot and supports triple-wide cards.
The enclosure is compatible with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50, 40 and 30 series cards, as well as AMD Radeon RX 9000, 7000 and 6000 series GPUs, according to Sonnet’s product information. It is intended for workloads that benefit from sustained graphics performance, including video editing, 3D rendering, colour grading, animation, visual effects and local AI tasks.
Sonnet has also built in a dock section with two Thunderbolt 5 ports, three USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports and a 5 Gigabit Ethernet port. The company says the system can deliver up to 80Gbps throughput and up to 100W power delivery over the host connection. A temperature-controlled fan is included for cooling, while the 850W power supply is positioned to cover current high-end GPUs and future, more demanding cards.
The Breakaway Box 850 T5 is priced at $599.99 and is available now. Sonnet and retail listings describe the enclosure as suitable for content creation, gaming and AI work, though real-world performance will still depend on the host computer, the GPU installed and Thunderbolt bandwidth limits.
