Snap’s Specs move closer to all-day wear with advanced spatial computing features

Snap’s new Specs glasses aim to redefine personal computing by blending immersive AR experiences with everyday wearability, signalling a bold step into the future of spatial technology.

Snap is moving beyond the simple smart-glasses format and into full augmented-reality computing. After years of work on the category, the company is positioning Specs as a proper spatial-computing device rather than a camera-enabled accessory. The pitch is clear: if Apple’s Vision Pro proved that immersive computing can work in theory, Snap believes the everyday version has to look and feel much closer to ordinary glasses. According to French publication Journal du Geek, that philosophy has shaped the project from the start.

That design choice comes with trade-offs, but it also makes Specs one of the more ambitious entries in a crowded field. MacRumors and Tom’s Guide report that the glasses use two Snapdragon processors, a stereo waveguide display and hand tracking, with automatic tinting, microphones and stereo speakers built in. Snap has set the price at $2,195, with launch plans covering the US, the UK and France later this autumn. The company says battery life can reach up to four hours in mixed use.

Journal du Geek’s hands-on report suggests the hardware is still bulky by normal eyewear standards, yet far more wearable than a headset. The glasses weigh about 130g and rely on a more integrated display system than rivals that act mainly as external screens. That approach lets Snap keep the experience tied to the real world, rather than isolating the wearer behind a headset. The field of view remains limited at 51 degrees, which should temper expectations, but the display apparently handled browser windows, video and other overlays with decent stability in short trials.

The software side is built around a dedicated operating system rather than a phone-linked companion mode. Journal du Geek says testers were able to move windows around a space, pin them in place and switch between more practical and more playful apps, including navigation, games and drawing tools. Snap is also pushing its own AI layer, called Specs Intelligence, which can be started with a long press on the frame and used through voice or on-screen prompts. The system recognises languages automatically and is being extended into iOS and macOS, with Android and Windows support promised later.

For Snap, that broader software ambition matters as much as the glasses themselves. The company is not trying to sell a novelty display; it is trying to define a new category of personal computer. Whether Specs can do that at its price will depend on battery performance, app support and how quickly developers build for the platform. But the early message is that Snap wants spatial computing to be something people can wear all day, not something they keep on a desk.
