Microsoft introduces Copilot in Excel to assist users with building, editing, and understanding formulas through natural language prompts, aiming to streamline data workflows and reduce manual errors.
Copilot in Excel is designed to make formula work less opaque. Microsoft says the assistant can help users build and edit workbooks, work with formulas, and analyse data through plain-language prompts, rather than forcing them to decode every function by hand. For people facing nested logic, broken lookups or inherited spreadsheets, that can save time and reduce manual checking. Microsoft also notes that Copilot’s formula suggestions can be managed separately, allowing users to turn proactive suggestions on or off in Excel. According to Microsoft Support, Copilot can also be used alongside features such as tables, charts and PivotTables, making it part of a broader workbook workflow rather than a single-purpose tool.
The practical appeal is simple: you can ask Copilot to break down a formula in plain English. MyExcelOnline advises selecting the cell, opening the Copilot pane from the Home tab and using a prompt such as “Break down this formula step by step.” In response, Copilot can describe what each part of the formula is doing and where the calculation logic comes from.
