Leaving routers at default settings may be convenient, but customised security and performance configurations are vital to protect your network and ensure optimal operation in busy residential environments.
Leaving a new router on its factory defaults is convenient, but it is rarely the best long-term choice for a home network. Manufacturers configure devices for broad compatibility and quick setup, not for the specific layout, interference levels or security needs of an individual household. In practice, the settings that get a network online fastest are not always the ones that deliver the best performance or protection.
The first item worth changing is the Wi-Fi password. McAfee says default credentials are often a weak point because they are widely known or easy to guess, and a unique password makes it harder for outsiders to join the network. A strong password is also easier to manage across phones, laptops and smart devices than a long string copied from the label on the router.
The router’s administrator login deserves even more attention. IBM reported that 86% of respondents had never changed their default admin password, while 52% had never altered any factory settings. That matters because admin access controls the router’s configuration, including security options, and publicly documented defaults can give an attacker a direct route into the device’s control panel.
Automatic channel selection is useful, but it is not always enough. In crowded flats or dense neighbourhoods, nearby networks can crowd the same radio channels and create interference. When that happens, manual channel selection can improve stability and reduce congestion, particularly on older 2.4GHz networks where overlap is more common.
Security settings should also be checked rather than assumed to be adequate. Micro Center advises switching to a modern encryption standard such as WPA3 where available, updating firmware, enabling the firewall and reviewing guest-network settings. Those steps help close gaps that can remain even when the router appears to be working normally. The safest approach is to treat the factory configuration as a starting point, not a finished setup.
