OpenAI’s new Appshots feature enhances ChatGPT’s desktop capabilities with on-screen context capture

OpenAI introduces Appshots, a new desktop feature for ChatGPT that captures on-screen content to streamline workflows, improve context-awareness, and reduce task switching, signalling a deeper integration into professional desktop environments.

OpenAI is drawing attention to Appshots, a new ChatGPT desktop feature designed to pull on-screen context into a conversation without forcing users to describe it first. The company says the tool can capture the foreground window and send both an image and accessible text into ChatGPT, making it easier to work from what is already open on the screen.

The practical appeal is straightforward: less copying, less switching between applications and fewer missed details. OpenAI says Appshots can be useful for debugging software, showing a user interface that needs to be recreated, or bringing figures from another application into a chat. Because the captured content is treated like an attachment, it stays within the session in a similar way to manually uploaded files or images.

OpenAI has also built in shortcuts to make the feature faster to use. On macOS, users can press both Command keys together; on Windows, the trigger is both Alt keys. According to the company’s documentation, Appshots can include content beyond what is immediately visible on screen, provided it is accessible to the app, which makes the feature more than a simple screenshot tool.

The launch fits a wider pattern at OpenAI: ChatGPT is moving deeper into desktop workflows rather than remaining a browser-only assistant. The company has also been expanding its Mac integrations, including support for working directly with apps such as coding tools, terminals and Notes, while its broader push into workplace software has extended to Microsoft Office applications. Appshots appears to sit within that same effort to make ChatGPT more context-aware and more useful inside day-to-day professional work.
