Audio-Technica pushes boundaries with wireless open-back headphones for private listening

The Japanese audio brand introduces the ATH-AL5NC, a rare wireless open-back headphone aimed at audiophiles and remote workers, blending spacious sound with practical noise reduction.

Audio-Technica has widened a niche corner of the headphone market with the ATH-AL5NC, its first wireless open-back model and one of only a handful of products in the category. The Japanese audio maker, long associated with wired studio and enthusiast headphones, is trying to bring a more spacious listening style into a wireless form without pretending that it can do what closed-back noise-cancelling models do. The launch price is $279, or £219 in the UK, placing it against established premium rivals rather than budget alternatives. What Hi-Fi? noted that Audio-Technica is positioning the model against Grado’s GW100x, while the company’s own Japanese announcement emphasised the combination of open-back acoustics, Bluetooth connectivity and long battery life.

That positioning matters because open-back wireless headphones remain unusual for a simple technical reason: their design lets sound pass freely through the earcups, which helps create a wider, more natural presentation but also makes conventional noise cancellation much less effective. Audio-Technica appears to have responded with a practical rather than magical solution. According to its product information, the ATH-AL5NC includes active noise reduction, but the system is intended to reduce certain background sounds rather than deliver the full isolation associated with sealed ANC headphones. StereoNET said the model is being pitched for a blend of audiophile listening, home working and gaming, which fits a product meant for private spaces rather than trains or planes.

The specification sheet is unusually full for such a narrow category. Audio-Technica says the ATH-AL5NC uses 53mm dynamic drivers, Bluetooth 5.3 and LDAC support, alongside AAC and SBC, with claimed battery life of up to 75 hours, or 50 hours with noise reduction enabled. A 15-minute charge is said to provide eight hours of use in standard mode. The company also lists multipoint pairing for two devices, a 1.2m cable for wired listening, and a lightweight 240g build. AudioMatome reported the same pricing in Europe, including €249 on the continent, with the UK figure set at £219.

For buyers, the appeal will depend on whether they value soundstage and comfort more than isolation. In a market dominated by closed-back ANC headphones from larger consumer brands, the ATH-AL5NC is less a direct all-rounder than a specialist tool. It is aimed at listeners who work from home, spend long sessions at a desk, or simply prefer the open presentation of a wired audiophile headphone without being tied to a cable. In that sense, the launch is notable not because it solves every headphone problem, but because it brings a rare format to a wider audience with a feature set that is more complete than the category usually receives.
