Qualcomm unveils flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 with 2nm process and 5GHz CPU speeds

The company’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Extreme variant set to redefine high-end smartphones with advanced AI, gaming, imaging, and connectivity features, beating the 5GHz CPU barrier on a 2nm chip.

Qualcomm has introduced two new premium mobile platforms, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, in a move that further splits its flagship smartphone line-up. The company says both chips are built on a 2nm process and use its latest Oryon CPU design, with peak core speeds of up to 5GHz. The emphasis is on on-device AI, gaming, imaging and connectivity, as handset makers prepare their next wave of high-end Android devices.

The more powerful Extreme variant sits above the standard model and is aimed at the most demanding devices. Qualcomm says it combines two prime cores running at up to 5GHz with six performance cores at up to 4GHz, alongside a larger shared memory pool for heavier workloads. The company has also reworked its Hexagon NPU and Sensing Hub to handle more contextual AI tasks locally on the handset, which Qualcomm says improves both speed and efficiency. In its own product materials, the chipmaker claims the revised NPU delivers 35% faster performance and 33% better efficiency.

Gaming and content creation are also central to the new platforms. Qualcomm says the Extreme chip introduces Adreno Neural Fusion, a feature that uses AI to improve frame generation and image quality during play. On the camera side, the platform is designed to support 8K video capture at 60fps and imaging from sensors of up to 320 megapixels, while also handling formats such as Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and Hybrid Log-Gamma. The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is positioned as a more balanced flagship option, but still carries the same 5GHz-capable CPU design and the same general focus on advanced AI and imaging.

Connectivity has also been pushed forward. Qualcomm says the new platforms use its X105 5G Modem-RF System, with peak download speeds of up to 14.8Gbps, and FastConnect 8800 for Wi-Fi speeds of up to 11.6Gbps. Support for Wi-Fi 8, Bluetooth 6, LPDDR5x memory and UFS 5.0 storage is included as part of the platform specification. Qualcomm says brands including Honor, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Redmi, RedMagic, Vivo and Xiaomi will adopt the new chips, although the company has not formally confirmed every handset model that will use them. Reports have linked the platforms to devices such as the OnePlus 16, iQOO 16 and Motorola Signature 27, but those pairings remain unconfirmed.
