Hyperkin’s ShockLine transforms retro console power supplies with USB-C convenience

Hyperkin introduces the ShockLine range, replacing ageing proprietary power bricks with modern USB-C solutions for nostalgic consoles and handhelds, offering a practical upgrade for collectors and gamers alike.

Hyperkin has turned a familiar retro-gaming problem into a modern accessory category: power supplies for ageing consoles and handhelds that use USB-C instead of the original wall-wart adapters. The ShockLine range is aimed at owners of machines that still work but are let down by damaged, missing or degraded power leads, which can be the first component to fail on older hardware.

The best-known kits in the series are built for Nintendo and Sega systems from the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. According to Hyperkin, one of the main packages is designed for the NES, SNES, Super Famicom, Famicom and Sega Genesis Model 1, and includes a 30W/9V USB-C wall adapter, a six-foot cable and barrel-style connector adapters. The company also sells a Nintendo 64 version at the same $24.99 price, with a USB-C cable and a dedicated adapter lead for the console’s power socket.

Hyperkin has also extended the idea to handhelds. Its ShockLine line-up includes charging kits for the Nintendo 3DS, 2DS and DSi, as well as the Game Boy Advance SP and the Nintendo DS. For the handheld models, the company lists a lower-powered 10W/5V adapter and a different cable set, with pricing starting at $19.99. That makes the range less about performance gains than convenience: replacing ageing proprietary chargers with a standard connection that is easier to source and simpler to carry.

The appeal is practical rather than nostalgic. Old console power bricks are often large, heavy and awkward on crowded extension leads, and the cable ends themselves can fail with age. By moving these machines on to USB-C power, Hyperkin is offering a neater setup for collectors and casual players alike, while preserving compatibility with hardware that still has plenty of life left in it.
