Sonnet has launched the Solo10G T5, claiming to be the only bus-powered Thunderbolt 5 10 Gigabit Ethernet adapter, offering high-speed wired networking without external power, and broad compatibility across multiple platforms.
Sonnet has introduced the Solo10G T5, a Thunderbolt 5 10 Gigabit Ethernet adapter that the company says is the only bus-powered model of its kind on the market. The device is aimed at users who need wired networking for large file transfers, shared storage and video workflows, and it is priced at $199.99. According to Sonnet, the adapter works with Thunderbolt and USB4 computers, draws 7.5W and does not require an external power supply.
The hardware centres on an RJ45 10GBASE-T port, allowing connection to standard copper Ethernet networks through Cat 6 or Cat 6A cabling at distances of up to 55 metres or 100 metres respectively. Sonnet also says the adapter supports NBASE-T, so it can negotiate 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps links over existing Cat 5e or better cabling when used with compatible switches, routers or NAS devices. That makes the product more flexible than a pure 10GbE accessory, particularly in mixed-speed environments.
Sonnet is also emphasising the benefits of Thunderbolt 5 for network adapters of this class. The company says the interface provides enough PCIe bandwidth for full 10GbE performance, while the adapter’s hardware acceleration is intended to reduce host CPU load. Its published specifications also list flow control, TCP and UDP offload, IPv4 checksum offload, 64-bit addressing and Energy-Efficient Ethernet support. In practical terms, that should matter most on systems carrying heavy network traffic while running other demanding tasks.
The Solo10G T5 follows Sonnet’s earlier Solo10G line, which already covered both RJ45 and SFP+ variants for Thunderbolt systems. But the new model extends the same basic idea to Thunderbolt 5, with a smaller fanless aluminium enclosure, a captive but replaceable cable and support for Mac, Windows and Linux machines, as well as M-series iPad Pro models. Sonnet says the adapter is Thunderbolt certified, ships with a two-year warranty and lifetime technical support, and is designed to run silently in noise-sensitive environments.
