Renesas Electronics showcased its latest 3nm R-Car Gen 5 platform at Electronica India 2026, underscoring a rapid industry shift towards centralised and software-driven vehicle architectures, with a focus on edge AI and integrated mobility solutions.
Renesas Electronics used electronica India 2026 in Bengaluru to underline how quickly vehicle architecture is shifting towards software-defined design. At the exhibition, the chipmaker presented technologies spanning software-defined vehicles, edge artificial intelligence, EV charging and intelligent mobility, reflecting a wider industry move towards centralised computing and more capable automotive semiconductors.
The centrepiece of the company’s automotive push was its R-Car Gen 5 platform. Renesas said the fifth-generation family is built around a 3nm multi-domain system-on-chip, the R-Car X5H, which it describes as the industry’s first such device on this process node. The platform is intended to run several vehicle functions at once, including advanced driver assistance systems, in-vehicle infotainment and gateway functions, while also supporting connected-vehicle features such as personalised services and voice interfaces.
Renesas has also said the Gen 5 family is now moving beyond demonstration into developer access. According to the company, sampling has begun, and full evaluation boards and the R-Car Open Access RoX Whitebox software development kit are available as the next step in the programme. That matters because software-defined vehicles rely not only on raw compute performance, but also on the tools needed to build and validate applications across multiple domains in one electronic control unit.
A further focus of the showcase was edge AI, where processing takes place inside the vehicle rather than in the cloud. Renesas highlighted AI vision, autonomous and assisted-driving applications, and embedded intelligence designed to use sensor data locally. The company argues that this approach can improve response times and reduce the need to transmit large volumes of data to external systems, an advantage that becomes more significant as cars, charging systems and mobility services become increasingly software-led.
