Apple releases iOS 27.0.1 to address Face ID and touchscreen issues on iPhone 18 Pro models

Apple yesterday launched iOS 27.0.1, a crucial update fixing significant Face ID restart issues on the latest iPhone 18 Pro series, along with camera artefacts and touchscreen freezes, ensuring greater stability for users.

Apple has released iOS 27.0.1, its first corrective update for iOS 27, just two weeks after the main version reached users. According to Apple’s release notes, the patch is narrowly focused: it addresses a Face ID restart problem on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, a camera colour artefact seen under limited conditions on those same devices, and a touchscreen issue linked to Notification Centre and Control Centre. MacRumors and other outlets said the Face ID fault had been associated with authentication failures, freezes and unexpected restarts.

The most significant fix appears to concern the newest Pro models. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could restart unexpectedly when Face ID failed to authenticate. That matters because the bug affects a core security and unlocking function, and it was not described as a universal problem across all iPhones running iOS 27. Reports cited by MacRumors also suggested some users saw “Face ID is Not Available” messages during setup, along with problems involving the “Require Attention for Face ID” setting.

Apple has also corrected a more specific camera defect on the iPhone 18 Pro line. In Apple’s notes, as reported by Macworld and others, the issue could produce a colour artefact in photos taken at 2x zoom under certain lighting conditions when shooting at f/1.48. That is a narrow failure mode rather than a general camera fault, but it is still notable because the iPhone 18 Pro introduces a redesigned camera system with hardware and software changes aimed at improving image quality and flexibility.

The third fix covers a touchscreen freeze that could occur when opening Notification Centre and Control Centre at the same time. Apple does not limit that problem to any single model, which makes it relevant to a broader set of iPhone owners. The practical significance is straightforward: both interfaces are heavily used, so any temporary loss of touch response can interfere with everyday navigation, even if the fault only appears under a particular sequence of actions.

iOS 27.0.1 is being delivered as an over-the-air update through Settings > General > Software Update. Apple also released companion point updates for iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and visionOS on the same day, while older devices were directed to separate maintenance releases. The update adds no new consumer features; instead, it appears intended to stabilise Apple’s latest software after the initial launch period, when issues often emerge only after the system reaches a wider user base.

For iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max owners who have seen Face ID restarts or the described camera artefact, installing iOS 27.0.1 is the obvious first step. Users of other supported iPhones may still want to update because of the touchscreen fix, even though Apple’s release notes do not tie that problem to a specific model. As with any system update, it is sensible to back up important data first and to retest any affected function after installation. If the symptoms continue, further troubleshooting or Apple Support may still be required.
