Meike’s new autofocus prime challenges Fujifilm GFX’s portrait lens hierarchy with affordable appeal

Meike’s affordable AF 85mm F1.8 for Fujifilm GFX offers a compelling alternative to the premium Fujinon GF 80mm F1.7, emphasising autofocus performance and price competitiveness over optical perfection.

Meike’s first autofocus prime for Fujifilm’s GFX system is drawing attention for an unusual reason: it is being positioned not as a direct rival to the premium Fujinon GF 80mm F1.7, but as a far cheaper alternative that still delivers much of the same portrait-focused appeal. In a comparison discussed by Fujirumors and based on testing by Calibre Pictures & Ideas, the Meike AF 85mm F1.8 was judged to offer roughly 80% of the optical performance of the Fujinon lens at around one-sixth of the price. That makes it a notable option for GFX owners who want a fast portrait prime without paying flagship prices. Fujirumors also noted that the Meike is the second third-party autofocus lens for GFX, after an earlier release from another maker.

The optical gap, however, is not trivial. The Fujinon GF 80mm F1.7 remains the more accomplished lens overall, with stronger corner-to-corner sharpness and more refined background blur, according to the comparison summary. That matches independent reviews of the Fujinon lens, which have repeatedly described it as a purpose-built portrait optic rather than a landscape lens, with excellent central sharpness and softer edges that are acceptable for its intended use. Fuji Addict and ePhotozine both found that the lens performs best in the frame centre and remains highly effective for portrait work, while Imaging Resource highlighted its balance and usability on GFX bodies.

Where the Meike appears to gain ground is in autofocus behaviour. The comparison credited its STM motor with better focusing performance than the Fujinon’s DC motor, which is a meaningful point for photographers who rely on responsive subject acquisition. That fits the broader trend around the lens: Digital Camera World reported that the Meike AF 85mm F1.8, launched in Asia in July 2026, has proved popular precisely because it combines compact dimensions, a relatively light 406g build and autofocus in a segment where options remain limited.

The lens’s commercial appeal may also help explain why more Meike GFX autofocus optics are being discussed. Fujirumors says the company is expected to follow the 85mm with a 65mm F1.4 and a 110mm F1.8 for the system, although those lenses remain prospective rather than confirmed. For now, the practical message for GFX users is clear: Fujifilm’s own GF 80mm F1.7 is still the better lens optically, but Meike’s newcomer is emerging as a credible portrait choice for photographers who are willing to trade a modest reduction in refinement for a far lower purchase price.
