Roku launches a budget-friendly Home Monitoring System SE, offering basic DIY home security at Walmart for about $56, challenging traditional providers with no ongoing subscription fees.
Roku is offering a low-cost entry into home security with its Home Monitoring System SE, a five-piece starter kit now listed at Walmart for about $56. The bundle targets buyers who want basic protection without committing to a costly installation or an ongoing subscription, although Roku’s own site still shows the system at its standard $99.99 price.
The kit includes a hub with a built-in siren, two entry sensors, a motion sensor and a keypad. According to Roku, the sensors can flag doors or windows that open, close or remain ajar, while the motion detector is designed to pick up activity up to 25 feet away across a 120-degree field of view.
Roku says owners can self-monitor through the Roku Smart Home mobile app at no extra charge, and those who want more coverage can add 24/7 professional monitoring powered by Noonlight for less than 15 cents a day in the first year of an annual plan. The company has also said the system is meant for do-it-yourself installation, with guided videos and illustrations, and that no tools are needed to get started.
The hardware is built with practical fallback features as well. Roku says the hub has battery backup so the alarm can keep running during a power cut, while the sensors and keypad can last for up to 18 months on their batteries. If an alert is triggered, the system can sound an 88-decibel siren, and important notifications can bypass a phone’s Do Not Disturb mode. The platform can also be expanded later with more sensors, cameras, doorbells and automated lights, making the starter bundle a base rather than a complete end state.
