Nintendo has rolled out system update 23.0.1 for Switch 2, primarily addressing a software startup issue and refining the previous significant firmware release that introduced new features like VRR and system transfers.
Nintendo has rolled out system update 23.0.1 for Switch 2, a small follow-up to the more substantial firmware release earlier in September. According to Nintendo’s support notes, the new version addresses a problem introduced in 23.0.0 that could make software take an unusually long time to start, pause or close. The company has not listed any broader changes, and there is no mention of general stability improvements in the official notice.
The earlier 23.0.0 update was far more expansive. Reporting on Nintendo’s patch notes, Nintendo Insider said it brought several user-facing changes to GameChat, including a way to view previously joined chats, enter new chats without inviting friends and adjust screen size during conversations. The same update also added a settings option for Virtual Game Cards on the HOME Menu, letting users review and edit which consoles can access them, while also enabling system transfers between Switch 2 consoles.
That September firmware was also notable for introducing VRR, or variable refresh rate, in TV mode, although Nintendo’s own support material said a dock update was required for the feature to work properly. Nintendo Life reported that Welcome Tour was updated at the same time to support the feature in its “VRR Slider Demo”. Separate coverage also noted a handheld boost toggle in settings, underlining that the earlier firmware was designed to do more than simply tidy up the interface.
For most owners, 23.0.1 appears to be a maintenance release aimed at removing one of the more noticeable friction points left behind by the previous firmware. Nintendo has not indicated whether any further fixes are planned, but the company’s support page continues to list 23.0.0 as the major feature update and 23.0.1 as the latest refinement. Nintendo also provides standard instructions for checking the installed version and manually starting an update from System Settings if the console does not download it automatically.
