Apple releases iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1 for devices still on previous versions, addressing a critical CoreGraphics flaw exploited in targeted attacks, with an urgent call for users to patch vulnerabilities.
Apple has issued iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1 for devices that have not moved to iOS 27 or iPadOS 27, in a move the company presents as urgent. According to the security note highlighted by BGR and echoed in Apple’s own support material, the update is intended for users who remain on older software versions, whether by choice or because their hardware cannot run the latest release.
The patch addresses a serious flaw in CoreGraphics, the graphics framework used to process images and related content. Apple says the vulnerability may already have been used in highly targeted attacks against specific individuals, which makes this one of the more sensitive fixes in the current cycle. MacRumors reported that the issue, tracked as CVE-2026-86950, could allow a malicious file to trigger arbitrary code execution on an affected device.
Apple says the update applies to the iPhone 11 and later, as well as a wider range of iPad models, including the eighth-generation iPad and newer iPad Pro 11-inch devices. Installation follows the standard path through Settings, then General, then Software Update. For users who have already moved to iOS 27, Apple has provided the relevant fix separately, so there is no need to roll back to an earlier system version.
The episode is another reminder that point releases can carry essential security work even when they appear minor. In practice, users who remain on older iOS or iPadOS versions should treat the patch as a priority, particularly where devices may have been exposed to untrusted files or messages.
