OpenAI enhances ChatGPT with virtual try-on and document-scanning features for smarter shopping and productivity

OpenAI has introduced new features to ChatGPT, including an AI-powered virtual try-on tool for shopping and a document-scanning mode that converts camera captures into PDFs, expanding AI’s role in retail and productivity applications.

OpenAI has added two notable features to ChatGPT: a virtual try-on tool for shopping and a document-scanning mode that converts camera captures into PDF files. According to OpenAI’s help pages and reporting by TechCrunch, the shopping update adds a “Try on” button to eligible clothing and accessory listings in ChatGPT’s web and mobile interfaces, allowing users to upload a selfie or a full-body image and preview how an item might look on them.

The company says the feature is powered by ChatGPT Images 2.5, which it describes as improving lighting, texture rendering and image generation speed. Product cards can also be saved to a Favourites area and organised later in the Library, giving ChatGPT a more persistent shopping workflow rather than a one-off preview. ITmedia reported that the feature was already visible in Japan on domestic e-commerce listings, suggesting a broader rollout than the initial English-language announcement alone implied.

The virtual fitting function is not new in the market. Google began offering a similar AI-powered try-on experience in Search and Shopping in Japan in 2025, enabling users to upload a full-body photo and see how apparel might look before buying. OpenAI’s version follows the same general principle, but it is integrated directly into ChatGPT’s shopping results and image tools, which may make the experience feel more conversational and immediate for users already browsing inside the chatbot.

OpenAI has also introduced a document-scanning option on iOS. ITmedia reported that users can open the camera in ChatGPT, choose “Scan” from the three-dot menu and photograph several pages in sequence, after which the app assembles them into a single PDF that can be uploaded to the chat. That makes ChatGPT usable not only as a shopping assistant but also as a basic document-capture tool, bringing it a little closer to the multifunction mobile apps many users already rely on.
