Google rolls out major firmware update to Pixel Buds with enhanced translation and sleep features

Google has launched a significant firmware upgrade for its Pixel Buds line, introducing new functions such as live translation, sleep auto-pause, and dynamic noise cancellation, enhancing usability without new hardware.

Google is pushing a sizeable software update to its Pixel Buds line, adding new functions to models already on sale rather than launching fresh hardware. The firmware, version 6.144, is rolling out across the Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a, with Google presenting it as one of its more substantial audio updates so far.

Among the headline additions is Enhanced Live Translate, which lets users begin translation directly from the earbuds instead of reaching for a handset. The update also brings voice control through Gemini, allowing wearers to change key settings by speaking commands, including Active Noise Cancellation, equaliser adjustments and touch controls. Another new option, Tap to Mute, lets users mute or unmute the microphone during calls with a single tap, although that feature requires the earbuds to be paired with a Pixel phone.

Google is also adding an Auto-Pause function that appears designed for sleep detection. When the buds sense that the listener has fallen asleep, they pause playback, disable touch gestures and silence incoming notifications. For users who regularly wear earbuds while travelling or dozing off with music or podcasts, the feature should reduce unnecessary battery drain and accidental inputs.

The most device-specific change is reserved for the Pixel Buds Pro 2. Those earbuds gain Dynamic Active Noise Cancellation, which alters both volume and noise suppression depending on how well the earbuds are sealed in the ear. Google says users can install the update manually through the Pixel Buds app, while others can wait for it to arrive automatically when the earbuds are charging.
