Ring unveils rechargeable smart lock with integrated fingerprint and new 4K camera range

Ring enters the smart lock market with a rechargeable, feature-rich device featuring fingerprint access and app control, alongside expanding its 4K camera line with versatile indoor and outdoor options.

Ring has moved into smart locks for the first time, pairing the new device with a rechargeable design that avoids the usual dead-battery problem. According to Amazon’s announcement, the lock has a built-in power dial in the thumbturn, allowing the user to wind it back to life manually if the battery runs down. It also adds a fingerprint reader, a backlit touchscreen keypad, app control through Ring, and voice commands through Alexa. The company says it fits over a standard single-cylinder deadbolt and does not require extra wiring, while remote functions can be handled through Amazon Sidewalk rather than relying entirely on a home Wi-Fi connection. The price is set at $249, with availability expected in early 2027.

The lock is designed to slot into Ring’s broader home security system, letting owners manage access alongside cameras, alarms and doorbells. Through the Ring app, users can grant entry to family members or guests, or restrict access to specific time windows. That combination of local unlocking and remote management appears intended to reduce dependence on batteries and home connectivity at the same time, which is a notable shift for a category where reliability is often judged by failure modes as much as convenience.

Ring has also expanded its camera range with five new models. The headline additions are four 4K cameras: the Outdoor Cam 4K Plus, Floodlight Cam 4K Plus, Spotlight Cam 4K Plus and the Indoor Cam 4K. According to Amazon, the outdoor models are offered with different power options, including battery, plug-in, hardwired, solar and Power over Ethernet, depending on the model. The Indoor Cam 4K includes dual-band Wi-Fi 6, a 115-degree field of view and a physical privacy shutter that cuts power to the camera and microphone. Amazon says all four 4K cameras use its Retinal Vision 4K imaging system.

At the lower end of the range, Ring has added the Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam 2K, priced at $69.99. It offers 360-degree panning and 175-degree tilt, with motion tracking designed to follow activity automatically. The camera also includes a privacy shutter, mirroring the privacy hardware on the higher-resolution indoor model. According to Android Authority, the Indoor Cam 4K and Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam 2K are on sale now, while the remaining cameras are available to pre-order, with all models coming in white and black. The launch suggests Ring is pushing deeper into both premium 4K hardware and more affordable indoor monitoring at the same time.
