Sonnet launches bus-powered Thunderbolt 5 adapter enabling 10GbE networking for ultra-portable devices

Sonnet Technologies introduces the Solo10G T5, a compact, bus-powered Thunderbolt 5 to 10GbE adapter, targeting users needing high-speed wired networking on laptops and tablets without external power supplies.

Sonnet Technologies has introduced a Thunderbolt 5 adapter that adds 10 Gigabit Ethernet to computers with Thunderbolt or USB4 ports, positioning the device for users who need fast wired networking without a desktop card or external power brick. The company says the Solo10G T5 is its first bus-powered Thunderbolt 5 to 10GBASE-T adapter and that it is already on sale for $199.99.

The adapter is designed to work with Mac, Windows and Linux systems, as well as Apple’s M-series iPad Pro tablets. According to Sonnet, it can connect to 10GbE networks through Cat 6 or Cat 6A copper cabling, and it also supports 5Gb, 2.5Gb and 1Gb operation over Cat 5e or better cabling when used with a compatible multigigabit switch, router or network-attached storage device. That makes it suitable for environments that have moved beyond standard gigabit networking but are not yet fully built out for 10GbE everywhere.

Sonnet is pitching the Solo10G T5 at users handling large file transfers, shared storage and professional video workflows, where network throughput can materially affect day-to-day work. The company says the adapter draws just 7.5 watts from the host device, which means it does not need a separate power supply, and it places that feature alongside a fanless aluminium enclosure that should keep noise and bulk to a minimum. The unit is small enough, Sonnet says, to fit in an equipment bag pocket.

The launch also fits into a broader Ethernet line-up from Sonnet that spans 2.5Gb, 5Gb, 10Gb and 25Gb products across Thunderbolt and PCIe form factors. Among the company’s other offerings are the Twin10G and Twin25G adapters, which are aimed at users who need dual-port connectivity or optical SFP28 networking. In that context, the Solo10G T5 appears to be the company’s attempt to bring 10GbE to thinner laptops and tablets with the least possible friction.
