Sigma expands its versatile 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary lens to Nikon Z-mount, offering APS-C users a record-breaking 18.8x zoom suitable for a wide array of photography styles, now with optical stabilisation and fast autofocus.
Sigma has added Nikon Z-mount support to its 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary, extending a lens already sold in L-Mount, Sony E, FUJIFILM X and Canon RF versions. The move gives Nikon APS-C users a single zoom that reaches from wide-angle through to super-telephoto, albeit with a variable maximum aperture that becomes relatively slow at the long end.
The lens stands out chiefly for its 18.8x zoom range, which Sigma describes as the largest currently offered on an APS-C mirrorless lens. In 35mm terms, it is equivalent to 24-450mm, a range that makes it suitable for landscape work, interiors, travel, sport, wildlife and aviation without changing lenses. Sigma says the optical design includes low-dispersion and aspherical elements, with the intent of maintaining sharpness, colour accuracy and aberration control across the zoom range.
Autofocus is driven by Sigma’s HLA system, or High-response Linear Actuator, which the company says is designed for quick, precise focusing and better subject tracking. The lens also offers optical stabilisation, with Sigma claiming up to six stops of compensation at 16mm and 4.5 stops at 300mm. For close-up work, it reaches a maximum magnification of 1:2 at 70mm, while the wide and telephoto ends are rated at 1:3 and 1:4 respectively. Sigma also says focus breathing has been controlled and flare resistance improved through testing and optical tuning.
Physically, the lens weighs 630g and uses a 67mm front filter thread, making it comparatively portable for the range it covers. According to Sigma, the Nikon Z-mount version carries the same optical formula as the earlier releases for other mounts. The lens is priced at $769 in the United States, while Sigma’s earlier announcement put the first wave of launches in April and May 2025 for the other systems.
