New step-by-step instructions show Apple, Google and major-network customers how to activate existing call and text filters without downloading separate software.
The Federal Communications Commission has issued new step-by-step consumer guides designed to help mobile users switch on robocall and robotext blocking tools already built into many devices and wireless plans. The agency said the materials are intended to make it easier for consumers to find protections that can reduce unwanted calls and texts without installing separate software.
According to the FCC, the online “How-To” guides cover Apple and Google devices, together with app-based services offered by the three largest national mobile carriers: AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. The Commission said users can follow the relevant instructions for their handset and carrier, then enable the protections they want in only a few minutes.
The agency said many of the tools come at no extra cost, or are bundled into existing service plans. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon also provide free features that let customers report unwanted incoming calls and texts, adding another layer to the anti-robocall measures already available to consumers.
In a statement, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said tackling illegal robocalls remains the agency’s top consumer protection priority. He said the new guides are intended to streamline essential information and help users block and filter calls directly from their devices, while the Commission continues broader enforcement efforts against illegal robocalls. The agency has also sought public comment on a proposed Robocall Scorecard, which would aim to help consumers compare voice service providers on their efforts to combat unwanted calls. The FCC said consumers can also find tips on avoiding robocall scams and learn how to file complaints through its consumer resources.
