Apple’s ‘Welcome Home’ event set to launch its smart home hub and homeOS

Apple is expected to unveil a six-inch smart home display, refreshed Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini devices, and a new homeOS platform at its 13 October event.

Apple is preparing to use its next launch to push more deeply into the connected home, with an event titled “Welcome Home” scheduled for 13 October. According to reporting from derStandard and several industry outlets, the presentation is expected to centre on a new smart home hub, refreshed versions of the Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini, and software built around a new home-focused platform called homeOS.

The standout device appears to be Apple’s first dedicated smart home display, which is expected to act as a central controller for household accessories and services. Reports describe a square, six-inch touchscreen with two likely designs: a wall-mounted version and a tabletop model that recalls the old iMac G4, with the screen resting on a curved arm. The system is said to use face recognition or voice identification to recognise members of the household and surface relevant information such as calendars, contacts and reminders, while an iPhone would provide an additional layer of authentication for private content.

Apple’s software strategy appears to be equally significant. The new hub is expected to run homeOS, a name Apple is widely reported to have secured through a shell company, Home Operations Suite LLC. Industry reports say the interface will borrow elements from iOS, tvOS and watchOS, and will include control for items such as thermostats and door locks, as well as FaceTime and core Apple services including Music, Podcasts, News, Notes, Reminders and Siri. That would make the device more than a speaker or display; it would be Apple’s attempt to define a home operating environment around everyday domestic tasks.

The company is also expected to update older hardware rather than redesign it. Multiple reports point to a new chip for the HomePod mini, which has not been meaningfully refreshed since its original launch in October 2020, and to a new Apple TV model, its first major hardware revision since 2022. The outward design of both products is expected to stay much the same, although new colours for the HomePod mini have been mentioned, including green and pink. Other reports suggest Apple’s N1 networking chip will be used to add support for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 6.0, while the Apple TV may gain a faster processor and other internal improvements aimed at smoother navigation and better support for Siri.

The event also appears to be part of a broader home ecosystem effort involving third-party accessories. Leaks cited by technology sites suggest LG-branded smart home hardware, including door locks and thermostats, may be shown alongside Apple’s own products. These accessories are said to support NFC-based proximity features that surface information on the iPhone and streamline setup without external power. What seems less likely is a long-rumoured touchscreen MacBook; according to Mark Gurman, that device is expected later in the month rather than at the 13 October presentation. In New York, the event is due to begin at 9 a.m. Eastern Time, which is 3 p.m. in Germany and Austria.
