OpenAI’s updated Chrome extension can compare several open pages and carry out tasks such as filling forms, sending messages and organising tabs, bringing browser automation into software users already rely on.
OpenAI has updated ChatGPT’s Chrome extension so the assistant can look across several open tabs at once and carry out browser tasks without the user having to copy and paste between pages. According to the company’s own announcement, the tool can now compare information from multiple open pages, then help with actions such as filling in forms, sending messages, downloading files and grouping tabs. The extension is available in Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers, including Edge, Brave and Opera.
The change points to a broader shift in OpenAI’s product strategy. Rather than pushing users towards a separate browser, the company is increasingly trying to embed its tools into software people already use. MacGeneration reported that this follows the abandonment of Atlas, OpenAI’s browser launched in 2025, and comes after earlier work on a Chrome extension for Codex, its coding agent, which was designed to test web applications and handle work across several tabs.
OpenAI says the assistant can now go beyond reading pages and begin acting on them. In practice, that means a user could ask ChatGPT to enter details into an online form, prepare a message, or gather product data from several suppliers into a comparison table. The company also says the assistant can pause before a final submission, a safeguard that matters when the task involves sending information or uploading files.
The move places OpenAI in a crowded field of browser automation tools aimed at reducing repetitive work. Products such as FillApp and Fillify already market AI-assisted form completion, message drafting and data entry, while tab-management tools such as WiseTabs and Fillr focus on sorting browser clutter into structured workspaces. OpenAI’s advantage is that it is attaching those functions to ChatGPT itself, rather than presenting them as a separate productivity add-on.
