OWC’s free Dock Ejector 2.1 utility safely unmounts attached volumes in one action and reaches the Apple App Store for the first time, while Mac users gain higher-power USB support on compatible docks.
Other World Computing has released Dock Ejector 2.1, a free utility for Mac and PC that lets users safely disconnect every attached data volume with one action before removing a dock. The company says the software is intended to reduce the chance of data loss or corruption when external storage is unplugged, particularly in workflows that rely on removable media. It is now available from OWC’s website and, for the first time, through the Apple App Store.
According to OWC, the tool is designed to handle not only standard drives but also SoftRAID, AppleRAID and other non-RAID volumes, including camera cards. That matters because improperly unmounting media formatted as ExFAT or FAT32 can be especially risky in cross-platform creative workflows, where files are often moved between Macs, PCs and production equipment. By combining the eject process into a single click, the software removes the need to find and unmount each device separately.
On Mac systems, Dock Ejector 2.1 also adds a separate hardware-related function: it can enable supported OWC dock USB ports for higher-power operation as recognised by macOS. OWC says this allows compatible peripherals to draw the extra power they need, or charge more quickly, without users having to adjust macOS security settings. The company cites devices such as Apple’s SuperDrive and certain mobile products that depend on a port being identified as high-power enabled.
Larry O’Connor, OWC’s founder and chief executive, said the aim is to simplify what is usually a manual task while making disconnects safer. He argued that the software adds convenience and protection on top of the dock itself, rather than replacing the dock’s core function. OWC presents the release as part of a broader push to tie its hardware and software more closely together, with Dock Ejector positioned as a no-cost companion rather than a paid add-on.
