Microsoft is rolling out a major OneDrive overhaul with file analysis, broader format support, faster syncing, smarter photo tools and more flexible sharing.
Microsoft has given OneDrive one of its most substantial updates in years, turning the file service into a more capable workspace for AI-assisted productivity, collaboration and media management. At a OneDrive + Copilot event, the company said the service is being reshaped around three priorities: making files more useful, simplifying everyday work and improving the way people handle personal photos and memories. In practical terms, that means Copilot features, broader file-format support, stronger sync performance and a new set of tools for sharing and image editing.
The biggest change is the wider role of Copilot. Microsoft says Copilot is now generally available in OneDrive and SharePoint, where it can summarise documents, compare multiple files and help users turn existing material into new outputs. The company also showed functions for analysing across several files at once, converting content into HTML reports, generating repeatable workflows and surfacing prompts through a dedicated gallery. Microsoft Support says Copilot in OneDrive is designed to help with file understanding, document summaries and comparisons, while also setting limits around what it can access and how it handles data.
OneDrive is also becoming more flexible as a file system. Microsoft said the Windows and Mac desktop clients can now sync up to one million items, manage long file paths more intelligently to reduce errors and run on systems with as little as 8 GB of RAM. HTML and Markdown files are now treated as first-class content, with the ability to open, edit and collaborate on them inside OneDrive. Microsoft has also introduced a OneDrive command line interface in private preview, aimed at users who want more control over syncing, exclusions, account details and policy status.
On sharing, Microsoft is adding Hero Links, which allow permissions to be changed without altering the link itself, with expiry controls due later. The photo experience is also being expanded. OneDrive photos will support natural-language search through Copilot, a map-based browsing view and AI editing tools for improving or reworking images. A separate Create area will let users turn photos into collages, holiday cards and other shareable items. Looking ahead, Microsoft said it is considering support for an agent-based collaboration mode, a view that highlights files created with Copilot, automated diagnosis of file issues and tools for fixing sharing permissions. The broader direction is clear: OneDrive is moving beyond storage and sync towards a more integrated, AI-led content platform.
