Sennheiser’s premium MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 earbuds combine high-resolution audio, adaptive noise cancellation and long battery life with a rare promise of user-replaceable batteries.
Sennheiser’s latest flagship true wireless earbuds arrive with a clear argument for relevance in a crowded premium market: sound quality still matters, but durability now matters too. The MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 is designed to compete with the best-known names in the category, yet its most notable upgrade is not a new codec or a louder marketing claim. It is the decision to make the batteries in both the earbuds and the charging case user-replaceable, a rare move in a product class where worn cells often push otherwise functional hardware towards the bin. According to the ecoustics review, that serviceability is one of the defining features of the model, and it is being positioned as a practical answer to battery degradation and electronic waste. TechRadar has also singled the earbuds out among 2026’s standout models, citing both their sound and their sustainability angle.
That long-term design philosophy is paired with a specification sheet that leaves little out. The earbuds use 7mm Sennheiser TrueResponse dynamic drivers, support Bluetooth 6.0, and offer SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless, with playback of up to 24-bit/96kHz on compatible devices. The company also includes hybrid adaptive active noise cancellation, six MEMS microphones, two bone-conduction voice sensors, Dolby Atmos with head tracking, USB-C and wireless charging, and an IP54 rating for the earbuds themselves. ecoustics says the batteries can last up to 12 hours with ANC off, and up to 40 hours in total with the case, while the companion Sennheiser Smart Control Plus app adds an 8-band equaliser and hearing compensation tools.
In use, the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 appears to prioritise comfort as much as specification depth. RTINGS describes the fit as very comfortable and stable, including during exercise, while ecoustics found the compact housings secure enough for longer sessions and ordinary movement. The earphones’ construction is largely plastic, but that does not appear to undermine the impression of solidity, and the charging case is said to close with a firm, reassuring action. What matters more in practice is that Sennheiser has combined the replaceable-battery design with sensible maintenance details, including removable silicone tips with debris filters, which should make cleaning easier and help preserve nozzle performance over time.
Sound remains the main reason these earbuds are being discussed at the top end of the market. ecoustics characterises the tuning as warm and broadly V-shaped, with a restrained bass response by default, a prominent midrange and a lively treble that can lose some composure in busier material. The same review says the model responds well to bass boost, which adds weight without turning muddy, while What Hi-Fi and Tom’s Guide both describe the presentation as rich, detailed and balanced. SoundGuys likewise places the model among the strongest wireless contenders, while noting that the top end can sometimes feel slightly unusual. Taken together, the broader critical view is that Sennheiser has built an earbud that is musically satisfying first, and feature-rich without becoming merely feature-led.
The trade-offs are relatively measured. ecoustics says the ANC is effective but can subtly affect the sound, and that the highest treble does not quite extend with the authority of the very best rivals. RTINGS reports strong attenuation across the frequency range and battery life of up to 6.5 hours with ANC on, which is broadly in line with the category’s premium tier. Even so, Sennheiser’s position is now clearer than it has been in previous generations: the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 is not just another polished pair of earbuds, but a serious attempt to build a flagship product that can stay in service longer. In a market where convenience often comes at the expense of repairability, that may be its most important feature.
