Microsoft is removing eight OneDrive-linked AI actions from Windows 11’s right-click menu after users criticised its growing clutter, while keeping Copilot features available elsewhere.
Microsoft is scaling back a batch of Copilot actions in Windows 11 File Explorer after criticism that the right-click menu had become cluttered with AI prompts many users did not want. According to Windows Latest, eight AI-driven options are being withdrawn from the context menu: Summarise, Create FAQ, Compare Files, Ask a question, Explain image, Explain images, Compare images and Extract text. The move affects actions tied to OneDrive and is being presented by Microsoft as a simplification of the interface rather than a full retreat from AI features.
The change does not remove Copilot from File Explorer altogether. Windows Latest said the Ask Copilot option remains in the menu, while Microsoft also continues to surface related functions through the File Explorer Home area and the OneDrive activity centre. In other words, the company is trimming the most visible layer of AI integration while keeping access points elsewhere in the operating system.
Windows Central reported that Microsoft is also adjusting the way the menu behaves when no relevant AI action is available, or when the user has switched these functions off. In those cases, the AI section will no longer appear, which should make the context menu less crowded. That update is still in preview and is expected to arrive in a future Windows 11 release. The broader pattern is consistent with recent changes elsewhere in Windows, where Microsoft has also given users more scope to disable AI-related items, even as it continues to build new Copilot features into the platform.
