SK hynix has halted preparations for a potential Solidigm listing and pre-IPO funding round, citing volatile capital markets while keeping the US memory unit’s long-term expansion plans intact.
SK hynix has paused plans for a pre-IPO investment round and a possible public listing of Solidigm, its US subsidiary, after a sharp shift in capital-market conditions and a sell-off in semiconductor shares. In a disclosure on October 23, the company said Solidigm had been examining several funding routes to expand production capacity and strengthen competitiveness, but would stop reviewing pre-IPO and IPO options for now.
The South Korean memory maker said the decision does not alter its view of Solidigm’s long-term growth prospects or its need for further investment. It still sees the unit as important to meeting rising demand for memory in the artificial intelligence era, particularly by enlarging production capability in the United States. SK hynix also said outside funding could support capital spending while leaving room for shareholder returns such as dividends and share buy-backs.
The move marks a pause rather than a retreat. SK hynix said it had been weighing direct investment against external financing through a listing, but opted to step back after recent market volatility made the timing less attractive. The company’s position is that Solidigm could still unlock value if markets eventually assign it a fuller valuation, but that prospect is being deferred until conditions improve.
The change comes only weeks after Reuters reported that Solidigm was exploring an initial public offering that could value the business at as much as $150 billion, after meetings with investment banks in September. It also follows a period of heavy capital spending across SK hynix’s memory business, including plans tied to AI chip demand and manufacturing expansion. Against that backdrop, the current pause suggests the company is choosing flexibility over speed, while keeping the option of a future listing alive.
