ORICO gives old SATA drives a retro makeover with tool-free USB enclosure

ORICO’s decorative 2.5-inch enclosure combines a vintage-inspired shell and interchangeable labels with USB 3.0, UASP and support for drives up to 6TB.

ORICO has introduced a 2.5-inch external enclosure that leans on retro styling rather than the plain plastic look common to budget drive cases. The product is aimed at users who want to reuse an older SATA hard drive or SSD, while also offering a more decorative shell for desktop or portable storage. The design includes a vintage-inspired finish and interchangeable tape-like accents for identifying drives, turning a functional accessory into something closer to a small display item.

Beyond the appearance, the enclosure is built around USB 3.0 and UASP support. The company says that combination allows transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps and can improve performance by around 70% compared with standard USB 3.0 operation in suitable conditions. The interface remains backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 ports, which gives it broader reach on older systems even if throughput will naturally fall when connected to slower hardware.

Practical features are also central to the design. ORICO says the case can be assembled without tools in about three seconds, and it supports hot swapping, automatic sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity and a blue status LED for drive activity. A 50cm USB-A cable is included, which should make it easier to connect to laptops, desktop PCs and other compatible devices without adding much clutter.

Compatibility is pitched broadly for 2.5-inch SATA I, II and III drives, whether HDD or SSD, in 7mm and 9.5mm thicknesses, with support for capacities of up to 6TB. The company says the enclosure can be used with Windows, Linux and Mac systems, and also with devices such as televisions and PlayStation 4 consoles for file playback or data transfer. Independent listings of similar ORICO 2.5-inch enclosures describe the range as a low-cost, tool-free option for repurposing old drives, and AppleInsider has previously noted that the brand’s basic models are simple to assemble and suitable for Mac users who want external storage without complications.

ORICO is also using a limited-time pricing campaign to push the product. According to the company’s promotion, a 20% discount can be combined with a further 15% code, bringing two listed models down to ¥882 and ¥950 respectively during the offer window from 24 October to 31 October. That positions the enclosure as a low-cost accessory with a strong emphasis on convenience, while the retro shell gives it a visual hook that sets it apart from standard utility-grade cases.
