Lexar’s SL500 turns the smartphone into a serious production rig

With support for direct ProRes recording, transfer speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s and a phone-friendly magnetic option, Lexar’s SL500 targets creators running professional workflows from their smartphones.

Phone-based production has outgrown the era of casual clips and quick social posts. For many photographers and videographers, a smartphone is now a serious capture tool for behind-the-scenes work, short-form promos and even client-facing content. That shift has made storage a practical bottleneck. A device that can move files quickly and hold them safely is no longer a convenience; it is part of the working kit. Lexar’s SL500 Portable SSD is aimed directly at that problem.

The central issue is simple: modern phone workflows create large files fast. High-resolution stills and ProRes video can fill internal storage with alarming speed, forcing creators to stop mid-shoot and clear space or push material to the cloud. That is disruptive when time matters. A fast external SSD lets footage be recorded, offloaded and carried on to the next device without the stop-start routine that comes from constantly managing capacity.

Lexar says the SL500 is built for that kind of mobile use, with read speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1,800 MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. The drive supports recording ProRes straight to external storage on compatible iPhone 15 Pro models and later Pro devices via USB-C, which makes it useful for creators who want to bypass internal storage altogether. It is also offered in 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB versions, giving users a choice between day-to-day portability and larger headroom for longer shoots.

The physical design is clearly aimed at field work. Lexar describes the SL500 as a slim aluminium unibody drive that is only 4.8 mm thick, with IP54 resistance against dust and splashes and drop protection to 2 metres. The optional Mag Set version adds a magnetised sleeve so the drive can attach to a compatible phone, which is a practical touch for one-handed shooting on location. Lexar also includes DataShield software with 256-bit AES encryption, a useful safeguard for anyone storing client material, personal footage or unreleased work on a portable device.

Independent reviews broadly support the appeal of the SL500, particularly for its size, travel-friendly build and headline speed figures. TechRadar, PCWorld and Digital Camera World all point to its slim profile and strong transfer performance, while Macworld highlights the magnetic set as especially well suited to iPhone filmmakers. Tom’s Hardware, however, notes that sustained write performance can trail the drive’s peak claims in heavier workloads, so creators should view the SL500 as a strong mobile storage option rather than a substitute for a more specialised high-end workstation drive. Even so, for photographers and video creators whose work now depends on phones as much as cameras, the SL500 fits a real and growing need.
