Tata, Honda and Hyundai accelerate India’s next electric SUV wave

Three locally manufactured electric SUVs, including Tata’s seven-seat Safari.ev and Honda’s first India-built EV, are expected to expand the country’s battery-powered line-up before the end of the year.

India’s local electric-car pipeline is set to widen again before the year ends, with Tata Motors, Honda and Hyundai each preparing new battery-powered models for the market. According to GaadiWaadi, the next wave will include a large Tata SUV, Honda’s first locally made EV, and Hyundai’s compact all-electric SUV, underscoring how quickly domestic EV manufacturing is expanding as established brands move to fill gaps in their line-ups.

Tata Motors is expected to reveal the Safari.ev as its flagship electric model, most likely in November, according to GaadiWaadi. The three-row SUV is being positioned for buyers who need seven-seat practicality without giving up zero-emission drivetrains, and it is expected to be offered with six- and seven-seat layouts. Spy images suggest a heavily reworked cabin with three screens across the dashboard, including a passenger display, while an independent rear suspension should improve ride quality. The report adds that Tata is likely to offer standard-range rear-wheel-drive, extended-range rear-wheel-drive and extended-range all-wheel-drive versions, with the middle variant expected to deliver close to 600 kilometres of range.

Honda’s entry is more significant still, as the company is preparing its first electric car made in India. CarWale reported that the production version of the Honda 0 α, first shown at the Japan Mobility Show, is due to be unveiled on December 2, with a market launch likely in early 2027. Honda is framing the vehicle as the gateway model for its new 0 Series EV family, which is being developed on a dedicated electric platform. The Indian version is expected to be a midsize SUV with a clean, aerodynamic shape and an interior that moves away from Honda’s current petrol models, featuring a flat-bottomed steering wheel, a tablet-style infotainment screen and a fully digital driver display. EV Car Bike India has previously reported that the model should be built at Honda’s Tapukara plant in Rajasthan, with a targeted real-world range of 450-500 kilometres and fast-charging capability from 15 to 80 per cent in about 15 minutes.

Hyundai is also preparing to add another locally manufactured EV, internally codenamed HE1i, before year-end. GaadiWaadi says the compact SUV will have a boxy exterior and the brand’s pixel-themed lighting, giving it a more rugged visual identity than many urban crossovers. Inside, it is expected to adopt Hyundai’s latest global cabin layout, including a slim digital instrument cluster and a large touchscreen infotainment system. Hyundai has confirmed that the model will include Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems, while the larger of two battery options is expected to offer roughly 500 kilometres of range, with cells sourced from China’s Svolt.
