The PS5 storage fix that saves space but cannot run new games

A USB drive can provide an affordable way to archive PS5 games and play PS4 titles directly, but strict compatibility rules and Sony’s limits make it no substitute for an internal SSD upgrade.

Running out of room on a PlayStation 5 is a familiar problem, especially as modern games routinely consume tens or even hundreds of gigabytes. Sony’s internal M.2 expansion slot remains the best long-term fix, but that option can be costly. For many owners, a USB drive offers a more affordable way to ease the pressure on the console’s built-in storage.

According to PlayStation’s support guidance, a compatible external drive must connect directly to the console and support SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster. Capacity must fall between 250GB and 8TB, and the drive cannot be used through a USB hub. Once connected, users can format it as USB extended storage through the PS5 settings menu, which erases any existing data on the device.

The main limitation is that PS5 games cannot be played from that external drive. Instead, the console uses it as an archive: titles can be moved off the internal SSD when space is needed, then copied back later for play. That makes the setup useful for households with slow broadband connections or restrictive data allowances. PS4 games are different, and Sony says they can be played directly from USB extended storage.

A separate use case is media storage. Screenshots and video clips can also be saved to external storage, although Sony does not allow the same drive to serve both as game archive space and as a capture repository at the same time. In practice, that means players who want to keep both their game library and their recordings may be better served by using two drives, or by reserving a small flash drive for quick transfers to a computer.
