The heating company is expanding its app with room-specific algorithms, mould-risk alerts and greater home-screen control, though its most advanced tools require newer tado° X hardware and a subscription.
tado° is rolling out a broader update to its heating app that adds Apple Live Activities, a more sophisticated window-open detector and a new mould-risk indicator, while also giving users more control over the home screen layout. The Munich-based smart home company said the changes will arrive gradually over the coming weeks, although several of the more advanced features are limited to its current X-generation hardware.
At the centre of the update is a revised window detection system that uses artificial intelligence to analyse how each room behaves over time. Rather than relying only on a simple threshold, the software learns the usual relationship between temperature and humidity in a specific room, helping it distinguish between normal fluctuations and an actual open window. The app will show whether the algorithm is still learning or has already been tuned, and, as before, heating can be paused automatically when an open window is detected to avoid wasting energy.
tado° is also adding a mould index for individual rooms. The feature uses the VTT model, which assesses temperature and humidity over a longer period to estimate whether conditions are likely to encourage mould growth. The app will label the risk as low, elevated or high, giving users an early warning that ventilation or other corrective action may be needed. The company is clear, however, that this is only a calculated risk assessment and cannot detect existing mould.
For iPhone users, the most visible change may be the addition of Live Activities. When heating boost mode is switched on, its status can now be followed from the lock screen and Dynamic Island, with tado° saying the information will also appear on Apple Watch and Mac. A shortcut can also return heating to the regular schedule without opening the app. These Live Activities functions are to be offered free to all tado° X users.
The redesigned home screen is already available and lets users rearrange tiles or hide elements they do not need. That customisation is free for all tado° customers. The AI-powered window detection and mould index will be included in the company’s paid AI Assist subscription, which costs €3.99 a month or €29.99 a year and is available to tado° X owners. The package also includes automated geofencing, adaptive heating and pre-heating before arrival, while users of older V3+ systems remain on the separate Auto Assist plan.
